Saying Goodbye to a Favorite Hen

Hey Hey Backyard Hen Chicken

There is some sad news in my garden this week. My sweet, sassy, much beloved, and a favorite chicken, Hey-Hey, was unfortunately attacked by a Hawk and did not survive.

She showed up to the backyard one day via the Chicken Distribution System (that is to say, she showed up on her own out of nowhere) around the same time that our coop was built.  We attempted to house her with the rest of our chickens but she was much happier on her own outside the big coop foraging in the yard and causing chaos in the garden.

Unlike her namesake inspiration (Moana’s Hei Hei), she was very smart for such a small hen and often outwitted and outran the dog. She had her own mini coop but also enjoyed roosting on tree branches.

Hey Hey would’ve been a very good mama hen. She disappeared more than once only to be found nearby protecting her clutch of eggs. She had the loudest personality in the yard, always greeting me with a cackle, and entertaining everyone with her silly antics of chasing squirrels among other things.

She will be missed.

Take care,

~Nicole
